Many artists live on the island, especially notable for their glass and ceramics. We spent 5 days there at the summer house of my friend, Jacqueline, near the white sand dunes, on the beach at the southern end of the island. It was too cold for swimming, but it was sunny and very pleasant all but one day, and that day it stormed. My friend, Jacqueline, is Australian and her husband, Thorkil, is from Børnholm. My other friend, Corinne, is English. We met in language school 35 years ago, and then we had our babies at the same times, except each of them has 3 children. We had a great time on the island getting caught up.
Right now I'm staying with Corinne and Leif in the old city of Copenhagen. They have a house from 1800. I'm in the guest room in the attic - vey nice. I've borrowed Corinne's bike and Jacqueline and I have biked all over the city for the last two days. I've biked about 45 km. I've visited some of the old haunts, and many new places. It's a gorgeous city, even more beautiful than when I lived here 25 years ago. There's a new theater and opera house near the water. The canals have been cleaned up, and there is even a swimming pool within the harbor. There are new parks, new canals, gorgeous glass apartment and office buildings. So many of the old ugly warehouses have become new modern million dollar condos. There are new squares and gardens. Many areas have been cleaned up and beautified. 1995 to 2005 was a time of affluence and lots of rennovation. Old couryards in Copenhagen were cleared and now have lovely gardens. It's exciting to see so many bike trails all over the city which makes it a very bicycle friendly town. There is also a new subway system that doesn't have drivers.
I'm having a great time, and the weather has been very nice. My Danish is quite good, and I'm having fun speaking it. Everyone asks about the election so it is certainly on peoples' minds here.
